Losing Sight of the Forest

Here at Delta Business Solutions, we launched MyVideoToolbox back in May.  We were so excited about all of the fabulous features, we devised ways of unloading everything on people all at once. We wanted everyone to know that you could create your own contact list within MyVideoToolbox and get tracking activity emailed or texted to your cell phone, you can upload from YouTube, make your own videos, use your webcam, create links for corporate email, use our prevention videos and other content, market with MyVideoToolbox, get new leads, forward to friends and family, post to Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc., forever and ever etc.

Sometimes we get so focused on what we’re trying to do, that we lose sight of what we’re trying to accomplish.Brent Bowthorpe

We blew a lot of people away.  Oh yeah.

And we blew some people away, as in away from us, away from agent marketing, away from the whole concept.  That’s not what we had in mind.

Here’s what we learned:  Agents and Property Managers initally find value in MyVideoToolbox for only one or two of the following purposes:

  • Prevention Videos – Enhancing relationships and soft marketing to mostly existing clients
  • Tool for creating an email database while creating positive interaction with clients
  • Personal Updates to clients – Market changes, news, policy info, etc.
  • One-on-one interaction with clients, video messages for one individual
  • Marketing & solicitations for new business and upgrades

We learned that if we unloaded all of the possibilities and options available, the agents became overwhelmed and ended up doing nothing at all.

So here’s the take-away from the learning experience:  Do your reconnaissance, find out which of the five purposes floats your agent’s boat.  Help your agent do that, and only that.  Focus brings results and delivers value to the right person in the right way.

Find out what your customers want, go and get it, give it to them.

Brent recently made a profound and quotable statement:  ‘Sometimes we get so focused on what we’re trying to do, that we lose sight of what we’re trying to accomplish.’  What are we trying to accomplish?  Do we care if the agent uses MyVideoToolbox to its maximum capacity?  NO!  We want to provide tools that will bring value to the agent.  If he values marketing/solicitation, we help him do that.  If he values the prevention video program, we help him do that.  If he needs a way to communicate, or to create a database, etc., then we help him do that.

Be careful not to get caught up in the need to press your values onto your Property Managers and Agents.  Listen… find out what your customers want… go and get it… give it to them.  It’s that simple.
